Realizing that my first pond was a terrific addition to our backyard, I decided to build a second pond. This one I envisioned all winter. I wanted a waterfall and a stream. I also wanted a bigger second pond to raise more fish and to grow more aquatic plants.

In my first pond, I used an in-the-pond filter. This filter was a large plastic flower pot filled with lava rock. I used a 1200 gph Little Giant Pump to filter the water and run a bubble fountain. With the increased size, I decided to go to an out-of-the-pond filter for the entire system. This is the 100 gallon rubbermaid stock tank used as a biofilter and outlet for the waterfall.

Building a bigger pond meant digging a bigger hole. Fortunately, I got help this time. I hired two day laborers. They started at 9:00 a.m. and finished about 6:30 p.m. Our clay soil stuck to the shovels and picks. Made digging extremely difficult. I could use much of the soil to build up the mound for my waterfall. The rest had to be scattered in planting beds throughout the yard.

Next came the placement of the liner. I have read all the pros and cons on using roofing liner and decided to try it. It cost .$41 a sq. ft. As you can see, I had plenty to go around. I used the excess for the waterfall and stream. I still have some left for repairs or additions next year !!

Filling the liner took about 6 hours. I believe it holds about 2,000 gallons. I have several wide ledges which I did not have on the first pond. The first pond ledges were too shallow and not wide enough.
